Thomson & Craighead – Beacon

8/9/2011 – 22/10/2011

Curator: Doron Golan

Thomson & Craighead – Beacon
Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead‭, ‬two artists who have been collaborating since the early 1990s‭, ‬are among Britain’s leading New Media artists‭. ‬In their early works‭, ‬the two incorporated videos and technological elements into gallery installations‭. ‬Since 1995‭, ‬they have been integrating Internet technologies into their installations‭. ‬The‭ “‬Beacon‭” ‬project‭, ‬which was activated in January 2005‭, ‬constantly broadcasts data flowing through the Web such as search words and sound blasts‭; ‬it thus exists as a kind of mute testimony to the endless flow of online information‭, ‬while underscoring the fluid and parasitical qualities of the relations between user and community‭. ‬This software voyeuristically attaches itself to Web searches around the world‭; ‬it exhibits them in real time at a preestablished rhythm‭, ‬as an endless flow of concrete poetry‭. ‬Thomson‭ ‬&‭ ‬Craighead’s project has been exhibited in museums worldwide‭.‬

Net Video, Black Box

Curators: Doron Golan and Michael Szpakowski

12/1/2012 – 9/2/2012
Opening reception: Thursday, 12/1/2012, 20:00-22:00

The exhibition ‘Net Video, Black Box’ is a show compiled from the DVblog.org web site. Started in 2005, the site has borne witness to the rapid expansion of video art on the web (especially video art intended directly for the internet). It functions as a daily online video magazine and an archive for videos in the QuickTime format (the insistence that any piece posted must reside on the DVblog server has meant it is now unparalleled as an archive of the first years of art video on the web.)
The site has also tried to situate the new flourishing of video on the web in the context of the rich experimental film tradition of the 20th century, and although this is now becoming a commonplace, was one of the first to do so. DVblog has also been alert to the connections between art video and “applied moving image” such as the best of advertising, music videos and comedy.
We chose “Black Box” to refer to the cinematic presentation of moving image in a gallery space as well as a metaphor for the recording device installed in airplanes, a closed set of components that aim to document a different and vital kind of data.
‘Black Box’ refers also to the fact that ‘video art’ on the web has largely been ignored by the art establishment and the art market, perhaps because it is difficult to “marketize” work that is so freely reproducible. That such a view bears no relationship to the actual quality of the work will be amply clear from this show.

*This exhibition is part of the “NetCinema” project, a showcase for artists working with new media technologies.
Throughout the year Givon Art Gallery will present exhibitions of local and international media artists working with new technologies, including – but not limited to – digital video, generative, interactive and networked art, computer animation and robotics.

About DVblog Panorama

Over the last six years DVblog has been posting, on a daily basis, curated QuickTime videos exemplifying the recent striking explosion of art video on the net. Our policy has been flexible and eclectic enough to accommodate also the occasional advert, music video, documentary and gallery resident curiosity or wonder but our core project has been the net. This selection attempts to offer a panorama of material we have been struck and engaged by in those years. It’s partisan in that to some extent it’s a personal favourites list within that brief – to do justice to every angle would take days not hours. Techniques and concerns vary widely from the in-your-face appropriations of JimPunk , the joyful performative madness of Rupert Howe’s rendering of ‘Anarchy in the UK’ in, amongst other places, the London Underground, to the documentary poetic dreamscapes of Robert Croma and Millie Niss. Also included is the second life dance/dreamwork of veteran Alan Sondheim, datamoshing from young US artist Eddie Whelan and much more. When we say personal favourites we mean here, not only the exemplification of trends that matter but also excellence in the conception and execution of each piece. We think each work stands out, before consideration of any illustrative value, for this excellence.

Works by Wolfgang Staehle

Curator: Doron Golan

12/4/2012 – 19/5/2012

Givon Art Gallery is pleased to present works by Wolfgang Staehle. On show are three large projections of time-lapse photographic sequences of the urban landscapes of Berlin and New York as well as a group of photographic prints.

Among the large-scale projections is “Midtown, February 2005,” a 4-week image sequence of Midtown Manhattan as seen from across the East River in Brooklyn; and the première presentation of “Berlin, October 30, 2006,” a sweeping view of the Berlin-Mitte cityscape, as well as a view of “Alexanderplatz, 2011.”

A group of photographic prints of various urban places are composites derived from hours of image sequences, leaving only the slightest trace of movement.

Staehle employs a fixed-camera position, establishes a frame and simply leaves things to happen. The camera shoots for days and weeks. There is a suspension of intentionality and a perceived slowing down of the passage of time; a different register of the order of time takes hold. There is a stepping back to take in a wider, more total view; to track things slowly.

Wolfgang Staehle is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of net art and new media-based art. He is known for his real-time video streaming works including Untitled 2001, the recording of the attack and collapse of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001.

Staehle was born in Stuttgart in 1950 and has been living in New York since 1976. After his studies at the School of Visual Arts and extensively showing his early video and photography work in the 80’s, he founded the independent media arts project and early social network, THE THING, which became one of the seminal forums for net art. Staehle’s works have been shown at the Fridericianum, Kassel, the Fondation Cartier, Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Tate Modern, London, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, the ZKM, Karlsruhe, and at Gagosian Gallery, New York. Staehle is represented by Postmasters Gallery, New York.
