Givon Art Gallery is pleased to present works by Wolfgang Staehle. On show are three large projections of time-lapse photographic sequences of the urban landscapes of Berlin and New York as well as a group of photographic prints.
Among the large-scale projections is “Midtown, February 2005,” a 4-week image sequence of Midtown Manhattan as seen from across the East River in Brooklyn; and the première presentation of “Berlin, October 30, 2006,” a sweeping view of the Berlin-Mitte cityscape, as well as a view of “Alexanderplatz, 2011.”
A group of photographic prints of various urban places are composites derived from hours of image sequences, leaving only the slightest trace of movement.
Staehle employs a fixed-camera position, establishes a frame and simply leaves things to happen. The camera shoots for days and weeks. There is a suspension of intentionality and a perceived slowing down of the passage of time; a different register of the order of time takes hold. There is a stepping back to take in a wider, more total view; to track things slowly.
Wolfgang Staehle is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of net art and new media-based art. He is known for his real-time video streaming works including Untitled 2001, the recording of the attack and collapse of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001.
Staehle was born in Stuttgart in 1950 and has been living in New York since 1976. After his studies at the School of Visual Arts and extensively showing his early video and photography work in the 80’s, he founded the independent media arts project and early social network, THE THING, which became one of the seminal forums for net art. Staehle’s works have been shown at the Fridericianum, Kassel, the Fondation Cartier, Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Tate Modern, London, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, the ZKM, Karlsruhe, and at Gagosian Gallery, New York. Staehle is represented by Postmasters Gallery, New York.

וולפגנג שטהלה – עבודות

גלריה גבעון מתכבדת להציג תערוכת עבודות של וולפגנג שטהלה. בחלל הגלריה יוצגו שלוש הקרנות וידאו המורכבות מסידרה של צילומים ברצף-זמן, נופים אורבנים של הערים ברלין וניו-יורק
העבודות שתוצגנה הן ’מידטאון, פברואר 2005’, סידרת דימויים במשך רצף זמן של 4 שבועות של מידטאון מנהטן כפי שצולמה מהאיסט-ריבר בברוקלין. תצוגת בכורה של ‘ברלין, אוקטובר 30, 2006’, תצפית על נוף העיר ברלין-מיטה (מזרח ברלין), והתבוננות על ‘אלכסנדר-פלאזה, 2011’ בברלין המזרחית
בנוסף תוצג קבוצת הדפסי צילום של מקומות אורבנים שונים המהוים תרכובת הנגזרת משעות ארוכות של רצף דימויים המשאירה עקבות עדינים של תנועה
שטהלה משתמש בעמדת מצלמה קבועה, בפריים קבוע ופשוט ונותן לארועים לקרות. המצלמה מצלמת במשך ימים ושבועות. העבודות יוצרות השהייה מכוונת כך שתפיסת משך הזמן מואטת ומרשם הזמן משתנה והן מאפשרות ההתבוננות רחבה יותר, איטית וטוטלית
וולפגנג שטהלה מזוהה כחלוץ ופורץ דרך בתחום הנט-ארט והמדיה החדשה. הוא ידוע בעבודות הוידאו בזמן-אמת ברשת כמו העבודה ‘ללא כותרת, 2001’ שבה תעד את ההתקפה והתמוטטות מגדלי התאומים בניו יורק ב11 בספטמבר 2001. עבודה זאת תוצג בישראל בתחילת 2013
שטהלה נולד בשטוטגרט ב1950 והוא גר בניו יורק החל מ1976. אחרי שהשלים את לימודיו ב’סקול אוף ויזואל ארט’ והציג את עבודות הוידאו והצילום המוקדמות שלו בשנות השמונים, הוא יסד את פרויקט המדיה-ארט העצמאי ברשת – ‘הדבר’, שהפך להיות אחד הפורומים המקוריים והחשובים של נט-ארט ברשת. עבודותיו של שטהלה הוצגו בפרידריכיאנום, קאסל, פאונדיישן קרטיה, פריס, מוזיאון המטרופוליטן, ניו יורק, טייט מודרן, לונדון, מוזיאון הירשהורן, וושינגטון, זי.קי.אם. קרלסרו, גלריה גגוסייאן, ניו יורק. שטהלה מיוצג בניו יורק על ידי גלריה פוסטמאסטרס
