Gallery History, Profile & Agenda
Givon Art Gallery, ltd.

Since its opening in 1974, Givon has been committed to Israeli Modernism.

Through the gallery's relentless ideology and cultural convictions, Givon became well known as a Modernist gallery in Israel, and indisputably remains so today.

Givon is currently instrumental in the careers of 19 artists, including young artists in recent years. The gallery's program and collection represents an overview of the Modern movement from the 40's until today in Israel.

In addition, Givon also reflects the way that Modernism has been incorporated within the latest developments of Israeli contemporary art. This contemporary awareness has become typical of the gallery and was especially apparent in several theme exhibitions including: "Where Are the Children" (2000), "Critically Correct" (2003), "Hazeret" (2005) curated by Ory Dessau. Critically Correct (2007) with Susan Hiller "The J. Street Project" film, Douglas Gordon "Making Of Monster", Allora & Calzadilla " Sweet Glands, Sweet Lands".

In 2000, the gallery established an award in honor of Mr. Sam Givon, the founder of the gallery. "The Givon Prize for a New Art Work" is chosen and presented by the Tel Aviv Museum every year. To date, the artists: Guy Ben Ner, Karen Russo, Adam Rabinowitz, Shai Zurim, Gilad Ratman, Gil Marco Shani, Talia Keinan, Bat Sheva Ross, Lior Shvil have been awarded the prize. Using the Givon Prize, several of these artists were able to complete works they would not have been able to otherwise.

Givon's daily routine is very much in line with the gallery's original mission, as established in 1974. Today, Givon Gallery's primary activities are to support, promote, and exhibit contemporary artists.

The gallery continues to maintain an extensive collection of earlier work such as the artists of the "New Horizons" movement, as well as other artists working in the 60's and 70's in Israel. Givon has also hosted major international artists, such as Frank Stella and James Rosenquist, in 1998 and 2005, respectively.

While the gallery's official collection is focused, Givon continues to maintain and develop their personal collection of Israeli and International Modern and Contemporary Art in all media.

Givon is open minded to further dialogues and exchanges with galleries worldwide.
